Ruth D'Arcy (Inducted 1997)
D'Arcy transformed the Women's section to the Lifestyle section and won four straight Penny-Missouri awards in the process. During this period of growth and change, she frequently spoke at the American Press Institute about the changing role of women's pages. D'Arcy left the Detroit News to join the faculty of the University of Missouri School of Journalism, both as a teacher and director of the Penney- Missouri Awards program. She later left Missouri to retire to San Diego, where she was a part-time writing coach for the San Diego Union-Tribune. She is now fully retired, living in Richmond, Va. |

D'Arcy worked in features for 32 years at the Detroit News, serving
as a writer, columnist, Women's Editor and Lifestyle Editor. In the mid
1960s, D'Arcy was one of several editors in the country who not only
believed that there was more to a woman's life than society and high
fashion, but had the ability to force her paper to change. D'Arcy
always believed that her section should reflect who the readers were
and what they talked about, worried about and dreamed about.
