Elian tale finds boy adrift in a sea of lies

Michael E. Burke grew up in Springfield, Mass., and earned a bachelor of arts degree from the College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, Mass. He has worked as a reporter for the Springfield (Mass.) newspapers, Nashville Banner (Nashville, Tenn.) and The Transcript of North Adams, Mass. He moved to Florida in 1982 and took stints as a reporter, copy editor and editorial page editor at The Sun-Tattler of Hollywood (Fla.) In 1990 he went to work for The Palm Beach Post, where he has been a copy editor on the universal and features desks. He won the Best of Cox first prize for headlines in 2000, and he recently was among 18 journalists to study at the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill) Summer Institute for Midcareer Copy Editors.
