Newspapers should be kicking television stations’ butts -- to put it nicely.  That was the message from Rob Curley, VP of Product Development for Washingtonpost.Newsweek Interactive, to features editors at the AASFE conference in Savannah, Ga. Curley was talking about the fact that television websites are visited in far greater numbers than newspaper websites.

Blowing Up Your Staff
Overnight it seems, the print medium was declared dead. Deep ripples of change have caused newsrooms to suddenly reinvent themselves, note top editors, leaving reporters and editors not only frightened, but scrambling to create new and basic definitions of what a news story is.  According to a group of industry leaders from the New York Times, the Atlanta-Journal Constitution and The Gainesville Sun speaking at the AASFE 2007 Conference workshop “How To Blow Up our Staff”, mapping out new structures for newsrooms is the just the beginning of the process.
 
Writing About Ordinary People
Thanks to Connie Schultz, the coat check clerk at a Cleveland banquet hall gets to keep her tips. A syndicated columnist at The Cleveland Plain Dealer, Schultz found out the woman behind the coat check counter at Windows on the River, tired from a long day of work, couldn't even enjoy the benefits of her labor. Many had dropped money in the tip cup, but she would never see it. The money, instead, went to management. She used this woman's story for a column.

A&E Coverage: Finding Your Niche
In 1983, the finale for the television show MASH attracted 106 million viewers. In 2004, the “Friends” finale had 52 million.    These numbers illustrate the fragmentation of pop culture, according to Doug  McLennan, who presented “A New Model for Arts Journalism,” at the AASFE conference on Thursday.

John Berendt: A Sense of Place Matters
It’s all about the place. That’s according to best-selling author John Berendt. Berendt, 67, swapped Manhattan’s Upper West Side for Savannah for five years before writing the non-fiction novel “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.” The main character is the city of Savannah, Ga., with a cast of eccentrics being secondary.

Local, Local, Local: Covering Where You Live
Ever try covering your city’s annual fair, music festival or charity event with a fresh perspective? Or ever had a hard time getting information you’d need to write the perfect entertainment advance? As you already know, getting access or inspiration can be challenging. Having success has to do with advance planning. That was the core message of AASFE session called “Local, Local, Local” in which editors and event organizers discussed how get the most from an annual fair or event.
