The Omaha World-Herald Needs a Fine Arts Reporter
The opening of the $100 million Holland
Performing Arts Center in 2004, said to have among the best acoustics in the
world, transformed performing arts in Omaha. The center has hosted the Philadelphia
Orchestra, Yo-Yo Ma, Tony Bennett and numerous other big names in the
classical and jazz worlds. Omaha also has a brand-new, world-class symphony
music director, Thomas Wilkins, formerly of the Detroit Symphony. And our opera
company has staged several world-premiere operas and has mounted some
innovative productions, including last year's "Madame Butterfly" with sets by
renowned artist Jun Kaneko.
The Omaha World-Herald, a 220,000 Sunday circulation daily,
has an immediate opening for a fine arts
reporter to cover this vibrant scene. As part of a five-member arts and entertainment team, this person will write about classical and jazz
music, opera, and dance.
This
reporter reviews concerts and
writes advances for the weekly entertainment magazine. This reporter also produces
high-impact enterprise stories for the Sunday entertainment/features section.
We want someone
who can write for a broad audience --
not just arts insiders. Tell us about
the many specialized shoes required to stage "The Nutcracker" each year. Write
a page-one profile introducing our
new symphony director to the city. Do a narrative on the day the Joffrey Ballet
sets up shop in a city park for an
unprecedented outdoor show. Explain why symphony management and musicians are at
a stalemate in contract talks.
Interested candidates should email a cover letter, resume and
clips to the World-Herald's AME for recruiting, Jeff Carney at:
